Brian Ohsowski, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at Loyola University Chicago's School of Environmental Sustainability. He specializes in restoration ecology and conservation biology, emphasizing applied ecological approaches to address habitat fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change impacts. His research integrates soil amendments like biochar and mycorrhizal fungi to enhance ecosystem recovery and mitigate pollution.
Education includes a PhD in Biology from the University of British Columbia, and MSc/BSc degrees in Ecology and Biology from Eastern Michigan University. He teaches courses such as ENVS 320/420: Conservation Biology and ENVS 330/420: Restoration Ecology, focusing on practical skills for students' career success.
His research spans two key areas: (1) soil biogeochemical cycles and plant community recovery in disturbed landscapes, and (2) wetland ecology studies on Typha x glauca invasions. Notable grants include a $1.1M U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service award for invasive plant control and a $297,500 Illinois Tollway project on biochar-enhanced bioswales.
He has received the Langerbeck Award for Research Mentorship (2023) and secured over $212,000 in student research funding. His work bridges ecological science with real-world applications, aiming to improve large-scale restoration practices for land managers.
