Dr. Brian O'Driscoll is a Full Professor of Economic Geology at the University of Ottawa's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, holding the Newmont Chair in Economic Geology. His research focuses on mantle petrology, layered mafic intrusions, and platinum-group element geochemistry. He earned a BSc from University College Cork (2003) and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin (2007).
Education:
- BSc in Geology, University College Cork, Ireland (2003)
- PhD in Petrology, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland (2007)
Research Interests:
- Mantle petrology and magmatic processes
- Chromitite and platinum-group element geochemistry
- Igneous microstructure analysis
- Layered intrusion dynamics
His work bridges geochemical tools with field observations, particularly in understanding magmatic systems and ore formation. Recent studies include sulfur isotope heterogeneity in platinum-group mineralized rocks and in situ dating of enstatite chondrites.
Professional Affiliations:
- Member of the Executive Council of the Mineralogical Association of Canada (2021–present)
Advising and Grants:
Open to mentoring graduate students/postdocs in magmatic and ore systems research. Active in collaborative projects like the TRANSCEND University Consortium for waste management solutions.
Labs/Teams:
Leads research on mantle evolution, layered intrusions, and mineral systems through interdisciplinary collaborations.
