Brian Metzger is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Purdue University's College of Science, specializing in evolutionary biology. His research investigates the evolution of gene expression and regulation, origins of novel molecular functions, and experimental evolution using Saccharomyces yeast models through molecular biology, phylogenetics, and genomics approaches.
Education:
- B.S. in Genetics and Microbiology, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2009)
- Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Michigan (2015)
- Postdoctoral training at University of Chicago (2016-2022)
Metzger's research focuses on reconstructing historical evolutionary pathways using laboratory experiments to 'replay' genetic changes. His work identifies mechanisms behind new molecular functions through high-throughput analysis of regulatory differences across species and experimental evolution of ancient genetic sequences.
His recent publications (2017-2024) demonstrate strong research trends in: protein evolution and genetic architecture; epistasis in transcription factors; gene expression variation in yeast; and experimental evolution of ancestral proteins. Work predominantly utilizes Saccharomyces models and combines wet-lab experiments with computational analysis.
Metzger leads the research group Evolution of Novel Functions (Lab Website: https://www.evolutionofnovelfunctions.com/).
