Brian McCormick serves as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance at Lehman College, City University of New York since 2017. He concurrently teaches part-time at The New School (graduate media courses since 1997) and Arts Connection's Teen Reviewers and Critics program, while founding and directing Baryshnikov Arts Center's after-school initiative. His guest teaching roles span Scholastic Arts, The Rubin Museum, and Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.
Educational background includes a B.A. from SUNY Binghamton and an M.A. from The New School.
McCormick's research and practice focus on community-centered arts education, emphasizing dance and theater as tools for youth development and social justice. His work integrates media studies with activist pedagogy through programs for homeless youth and teen critics.
Professional recognition includes:
- Mayor’s Volunteer Service Award (1989)
- Linda LeRoy Janklow Teaching Artist award (2019)
As an educator, he contributes to arts governance through Pentacle/Dance Works, Inc. board membership and a decade-long tenure (2002-2012) on the New York Dance and Performance Awards (Bessies) committee. His editorial work includes 20 years as contributing editor for Gay City News alongside publications in The New York Times and Dance Magazine.
