Brian McCammack is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and Chair of the Environmental Studies Department at Lake Forest College. He holds a PhD in History of American Civilization from Harvard University (2012), an MA in American Studies from Purdue University (2006), and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University (2004).

His research focuses on intersections of African American history, environmental justice, and urban landscapes. Key areas include the Great Migration’s environmental dimensions, Black environmental labor during the Great Depression, and the role of urban spaces in cultural identity.
His publications include the monograph *Landscapes of Hope* (Harvard UP, 2017) and peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from African American foodways in Chicago to climate change policy debates. He has received grants from the Mellon Foundation and Harvard’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute.

He advises students on environmental policy, history, and literature. His courses include African American Environmental Culture and American Environmental History. He co-leads Lake Forest’s Sustainability Committee and collaborates on urban history projects via the Digital Chicago initiative.
