Brian Matz is a Professor and CSJ Endowed Chair in Catholic Thought at Fontbonne University. His academic focus lies in Patristic Studies, Christian Ethics, and Early Church History, with particular expertise in social ethics, theological exegesis, and Augustinian thought. He holds a PhD in Social Ethics from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and a PhD in Early Christian Studies from Saint Louis University, along with advanced degrees in theological and business studies.
Matz’s research bridges patristic writings and contemporary Christian social thought. Key themes include the ethical teachings of early Church fathers like Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa, the intersection of mind-body dualism in Late Antique theology, and the legacy of Augustine in medieval controversies. His work also examines biblical exegesis as a tool for ethical instruction and the historical context of anti-Jewish rhetoric in early Christian writings.
His publications include monographs like *Introducing Protestant Social Ethics* (2017) and *Patristic Social Thought and Catholic Social Thought* (2014), as well as edited volumes on patristic exegesis and the post-Augustinian debates. Articles span topics from predestination controversies to the socio-economic ethics of early Christian communities.
Matz has contributed encyclopedia entries on figures like the Cappadocian Fathers and theological concepts such as free will. His scholarship emphasizes rigorous textual analysis and contextualization of patristic sources within both historical and modern ethical frameworks.
