Brian Lewis is a Professor of Modern British History at McGill University's Department of History and Classical Studies. His research focuses on social and cultural history, queer studies, and the intersection of business, colonialism, and social policy. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and has authored influential works on topics ranging from 19th-century middle-class culture to postwar LGBTQ+ legal reform.
His educational background includes studies at Oxford and Harvard, culminating in a PhD. Research interests include British urban history, nationalisms in Ireland/Scotland/Wales, histories of sexuality, and penal reform movements. Current projects explore George Ives and queer activism between the 1880s and 1950s, funded by SSHRC.
Teaching includes courses on British urban history, queer history, and global surveys of World Wars. He supervises graduate students specializing in modern British history, middle-class studies, and queer theory.
Publications span monographs analyzing Lever Brothers' corporate empire, postwar homosexuality law, and edited collections advancing queer historiography. His work bridges micro-historical analysis with broader socio-political contexts.
