Brian L. Hohertz, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine. He serves as Assistant Program Director for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and holds key leadership roles including Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee, Director of Oral Boards Preparation, and Director of the Mortality and Morbidity didactic series. He also mentors medical students in the Practice of Medicine II course.
Dr. Hohertz completed his medical degree at Texas A&M University Health Science Center and residency training at UAMS. After practicing in a high-acuity cardiac/stroke center in Fort Worth, Texas, he returned to UAMS to contribute to the residency program he graduated from. His academic journey reflects a deep commitment to emergency medicine education and clinical excellence.
His research and professional interests focus on emergency medicine education, global health, and point-of-care ultrasound. He is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students, with a strong emphasis on clinical competency and faculty development. His international work includes annual medical missions to Limon, Honduras, where he provides care in underserved rural communities along the Mosquito Coast.
Dr. Hohertz has been recognized with the Robert A. Fisher Excellence in Teaching Award in 2020. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). He is active in professional organizations, currently serving as Past President of the Arkansas Chapter of ACEP, on its Board of Directors, and as an Arkansas Councilor to National ACEP.
He is also a member of the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD). His leadership extends beyond clinical care into shaping the next generation of emergency physicians through curriculum development, assessment, and mentorship. His work in global medicine highlights his dedication to underserved populations and cross-cultural medical education.
Dr. Hohertz was raised in a resource-limited farming community in central Texas. He attended Tarleton State University, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry, while working multiple jobs to support his education. This background has informed his commitment to access, equity, and resilience in healthcare.
