Brian Klaas serves as Associate Professor in Global Politics at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the Department of Political Science and Centre on US Politics (CUSP). He is a weekly columnist for the Washington Post, authoring the "Power Corrupts" opinion series that analyzes global democratic challenges.
His research centers on democracy, authoritarianism, Trumpism, political violence, and US foreign policy. Klaas has published three influential books: The Despot's Accomplice (Oxford University Press, 2018), The Despot's Apprentice (Hurst & Co, 2017), and How to Rig an Election (Yale University Press, 2018). Prior to academia, he co-managed a successful gubernatorial campaign in Minnesota, providing practical political experience that informs his scholarly work.
Klaas's publications reveal consistent thematic focus on electoral integrity and authoritarian tactics across Africa and the Middle East, with recurring analysis of Tunisia's democratic transition and Côte d'Ivoire's political challenges. His most recent work examines contemporary threats to democracy including political exclusion mechanisms and information warfare tactics.
As a Washington Post columnist, Klaas provides timely commentary on democratic crises including the January 6th Capitol attack, UK "Partygate" scandal, and global authoritarian trends. His op-eds consistently argue for proactive democratic defense against normalizing authoritarian behavior, emphasizing that electoral systems and political norms require constant vigilance to prevent democratic backsliding.
