Brian King is a Professor and Head of the Department of Geography at Pennsylvania State University. His affiliations include the Population Research Institute (PRI), Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI), School of International Affairs (SIA), and Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse. He is also an honorary research associate at the African Climate and Development Initiative (University of Cape Town) and co-editor of Human Geography and Nature & Society for The Annals of the American Association of Geographers.
King’s research focuses on livelihoods, conservation, environmental change, and health, particularly in Southern Africa. He has conducted research in Botswana and South Africa since 1999, examining topics like HIV/AIDS impacts, environmental displacement, and opioid epidemics. His NSF-funded work includes a CAREER award and projects on climate vulnerability and synthetic opioid overdose patterns. His book States of Disease: Political Environments and Human Health earned the Julian Minghi Distinguished Book Award.
Key research clusters include Environmental Change and Prediction, Food Security, Justice and Ethics, and Population Dynamics. His HELIX Lab studies the intersection of health and environmental systems, such as how the pandemic influenced the U.S. opioid crisis. Awards include the National Academy of Sciences Kavli Fellowship (2017).
King recruits graduate students interested in cultural/political ecology, health justice, and development/conservation. His work bridges academic disciplines and policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to global challenges.
