Brian Joseph Soher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at Duke University, affiliated with the Center for Brain Imaging and Analysis. His work integrates advanced MRI and MR spectroscopy (MRS) techniques to improve clinical diagnostic and investigative capabilities, emphasizing open-source software tools like MIDAS and Vespa. He has held academic roles since 1996, progressing through positions including Assistant Professor and Research Professor before his current appointment.
Dr. Soher earned his Ph.D. in 1996 from Johns Hopkins University. His research spans quantitative MRI/MRS development, body MR imaging innovations, and hyperthermia treatment monitoring via fat-water separation techniques. He has secured numerous grants, including an R01 focused on glioma progression biomarkers and another R01 investigating liver metabolism in NASH patients. His patents include a non-invasive temperature mapping method for sarcoma hyperthermia treatments.
His research interests center on enhancing data quality, removing confounding signals (e.g., water/lipid interference), and creating user-friendly tools for clinical translation. Recent projects address liver energy homeostasis using fructose challenges, absolute tissue fat fraction modeling, and J-difference MR spectroscopy optimization. He actively promotes collaborative software development and educational outreach within the MR research community.
