Professor Brian Garrod is a leading academic in tourism marketing and management at Swansea University's School of Management. He holds the title of Professor of Marketing (Research) and is affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on tourism destination marketing, sustainable tourism, eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and the application of photography in tourism research. Garrod is co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Destination Marketing & Management and serves on seven other editorial boards. He has collaborated with global organizations like the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), OECD, and the Welsh Government.
His expertise spans strategic tourism management, including destination marketing, cultural event marketing, and tourism well-being. Garrod has authored eight textbooks and over 50 research articles, contributing extensively to the understanding of sustainable tourism practices and visitor attraction management. He currently supervises PhD students in areas such as destination marketing, heritage tourism, and ecotourism.
Notable research includes studies on whale watching tourism in the Azores, casino resort competitiveness, and emotional drivers in tea tourism. Garrod emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, leveraging photography and stakeholder engagement to inform tourism planning. His work often addresses contemporary challenges like neurodiversity in tourism and sustainability communication.
