Brian Boyd is the William C. Friday Distinguished Professor at the UNC School of Education and interim director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, he directed the Juniper Gardens Children’s Project at the University of Kansas. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Florida (2005), M.Ed. from the University of Virginia (2002), and B.S. from the College of William and Mary (1997).
His research focuses on autism spectrum conditions, with an emphasis on vulnerable populations, implicit bias, and racial disparities. Key areas include evidence-based interventions in school/home contexts, outcome measurement, and healthcare equity. His work has been continuously funded by the NIH and Institute of Education Sciences. Boyd serves on national boards advocating for autistic individuals and underserved communities.
Recent research highlights include studies on healthcare equity for autistic LGBTQ+ individuals, cultural responsiveness in early intervention programs, and disparities in autism diagnosis. Articles emphasize behavioral inflexibility, sensory processing challenges, and policy-driven implementation science to bridge research-practice gaps.
Boyd’s leadership roles include past vice presidency of the International Society for Autism Research and active participation in multidisciplinary initiatives. His work prioritizes marginalized families and systemic barriers, with publications addressing topics like emergency department visits for children with autism and rural-urban healthcare disparities.
