Brian Bayless

Brian Bayless is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Santa Clara University (SCU), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on understanding how motile cilia structure affects their function, particularly in relation to human disorders like hydrocephalus, epilepsy, and infertility. He uses Tetrahymena thermophila as a model organism to study microtubule inner proteins and their role in ciliary motility.

Education includes a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, Irvine; a Ph.D. in Cellular Biology from the Colorado School of Medicine; and a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular and Cellular Biology at UC Davis. He teaches courses such as BIOL 1B (Information and Evolution), BIOL 114AW (Advanced Topics in Cell Biology), and BIOL 174 (Cell Biology).

Research emphasizes molecular and cellular techniques to probe ciliary microtubule proteins, aiming to uncover mechanisms underlying cilia dysfunction and associated diseases. His lab, The Bayless Lab, focuses on translating basic science into clinical insights.
