Dr. Vito Mennella is a Reader in Nanoscale Biology at Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences. His research focuses on the structural and functional analysis of cilia, centrosomes, and cellular microenvironments using advanced microscopy techniques such as super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and FIB-SEM. Key interests include cilia-related disorders like primary ciliary dyskinesia, the role of cilia in respiratory physiology, and the application of imaging tools for disease diagnosis.
His work spans studies on motile cilia dynamics, microtubule architecture, and the molecular mechanisms underlying ciliogenesis. Notable contributions include investigations into ACE2 isoforms in respiratory epithelia, implications for SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the development of imaging methodologies for 3D cell reconstruction. Dr. Mennella’s research integrates cellular biology, biophysics, and computational approaches to unravel nanoscale biological processes.
Recent publications highlight innovations in diagnostic tools for ciliopathies and the structural basis of cilia-related proteins. His findings contribute to understanding genetic disorders, respiratory health, and viral infection mechanisms. Collaborations leverage interdisciplinary methods to advance imaging technologies and disease modeling.
