Brian Athey

Brian Athey is a Professor at the University of Michigan Medical School and Founding Chair of the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics. He serves as an AI advisor to Michigan Medicine and co-founded the Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS). His interdisciplinary leadership includes roles in the Peking University-UM Joint Institute and the NIH National Center for Integrative Biomedical Informatics (NCIBI).

• Education: Trained as a biophysicist, he proposed the double helical crossed-linker model for chromatin and pioneered cryo-electron microscopy.

His research spans AI-driven drug development, pharmacogenomics, pharmacoepigenomics, and pharmacophenomics, focusing on neuropsychiatric illnesses and cardiovascular pharmacogenomics. He has contributed to the 4D Nucleome project and ontology frameworks like CIDO for coronavirus research.
