Kayvan Najarian is a Professor of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, Emergency Medicine, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan. He directs the Biomedical and Clinical Informatics Laboratory (BCIL), the Center for Data-Driven Drug Development and Treatment Assessment (DATA), and serves as Associate Director for MIDAS and the Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia
- M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, Amirkabir University
- B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Sharif University
Dr. Najarian's research centers on developing AI-driven clinical decision support systems using signal/image processing and machine learning to address critical medical conditions. His lab focuses on traumatic brain injuries, respiratory illnesses, cardiac arrest, gastrointestinal diseases, and drug development through tensor methods, fuzzy neural networks, and privileged learning. This work analyzes physiological waveforms (ECG, PPG), medical imaging (CT, MRI), and EHR data to generate real-time treatment recommendations.
He mentors PhD and Master's students while leading federally funded projects through the NSF, NIH, and Department of Defense. His lab operates under a philosophy of scientific curiosity, innovation, and life-saving applications, collaborating with the American Heart Association, MCIRCC, and Michigan Medicine to transform computational methods into clinical solutions.
