Brett Stemple

Dr. Brett Stemple is an Associate Professor of Music and Vice Dean (Performance & Research) at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, part of the National University of Singapore (NUS). He has been instrumental in shaping orchestral and research initiatives since joining YST in 2004, including the evolution of the YST Orchestral Institute. As a tubist, he served as Section Principal Tuba for the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) from 1998–2017, contributing to over 20 recordings and being recognized as a tonal foundation of the orchestra.

• Education: Bachelor's in Tuba Performance (Minor in Philosophy) from Eastman School of Music, summa cum laude (1990); Master’s and Doctor of Music in Tuba Performance and Pedagogy from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.

His research explores the intersection of 'Flow' psychology with traditional brass pedagogy in 21st-century conservatory contexts. He has convened international artistic research symposia, including Performer’s Voice (2012) and Performers(‘) Present (2016, 2019), and oversees undergraduate curriculum development at YST. Brett is also a Buffet Crampon Artist, performing on Melton Meinl Weston and B&S tubas.
