Prof Brett Pletschke is a Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Rhodes University, where he has worked since January 2013. He holds an NRF B2 rating (2021-2026) and serves as a Node of the CSIR/TIA/DSI Industrial Biocatalysis Hub. His research focuses on enzyme technology, biocatalysis, and biotechnology, particularly in enhancing animal feeds and developing kelp-derived therapeutics for diabetes, obesity, and cancer.

Pletschke’s recent publications highlight advancements in xylanase optimization, prebiotic production from agricultural waste, and marine-derived anti-cancer compounds. His awards include the Vice Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Award (2018) and Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (since 2018). He supervises multiple PhD and MSc students in the Enzyme Science Programme.
