Brett J. Esaki is an Assistant Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona, part of the College of Humanities. His research focuses on Asian American studies, spirituality, popular culture, and sustainability, employing ethnography and cultural studies methodologies. He examines how marginalized groups use religion and art to preserve and reinvent their cultural identities. Dr. Esaki holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from UC Santa Barbara.
Research Interests: Religion and Art, Religion and Popular Culture (including hip hop and manga), Asian American & African American Studies, Sustainability, and the History of Race in the U.S. His book Enfolding Silence (Oxford, 2016) explores Japanese American religious and artistic responses to oppression.
Teaching: Courses include EAS 250 (Hidden Histories of Asian Pacific Americans), EAS 390 (Asian and Pacific Religions in American Spirituality), and JPN 245 (Japanese Popular Culture).
