Her core research focuses on emotion regulation and emotion beliefs, with emphasis on how these constructs interact with cultural, biological, and psychological factors to influence well-being. She challenges assumptions about "ideal" emotions and regulation strategies, highlighting scenarios where regulation may paradoxically hinder motivation for addressing systemic issues.
Recent work examines the relationship between valuing happiness and diminished well-being, the impact of emotion regulation on political engagement, and the societal costs of growth mindsets about emotional control. Publications span journals like Emotion, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Motivation and Emotion.
The Affective Science & Health Laboratory champions transparent science through data sharing, preregistration, and diverse participant sampling. Brett also contributes to interdisciplinary discourse via the Handbook of Emotion Regulation, a comprehensive resource reflecting advancements in regulation theory and cultural contexts.
