Bret Harvey is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Fisheries Biology at Cal Poly Humboldt. His research focuses on individual-based modeling of aquatic vertebrates to forecast population sustainability and understand habitat restoration effects, consequences of riparian management for stream salmonids, and understanding introduced fish species in streams.

Dr. Harvey's research spans fisheries biology and aquatic ecology with emphasis on individual-based modeling approaches to understand stream fish population dynamics. His work combines sophisticated modeling techniques with field observations to address complex ecological questions related to habitat restoration, climate change impacts, and management of aquatic ecosystems. He has made significant contributions to the development and application of the InSTREAM model, an individual-based model for stream trout that has become an important tool in fisheries management.
His recent publications reveal a continued focus on applying mechanistic modeling to address pressing management questions, including effects of riparian forest thinning, thermal refuges for salmonids, and behavioral adaptations to environmental change. His work demonstrates how individual behaviors scale up to population-level effects, providing valuable insights for conservation and management of aquatic resources.
Dr. Harvey has taught FISH 685 Graduate Seminar (Experimental Designs for Field Research) and has collaborated extensively with researchers including Steven Railsback, Jason White, and Richard Nakamoto. His research has been published in leading fisheries and ecology journals including Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, Environmental Biology of Fishes, and River Research and Applications.
