Brent S. Steel is the University Distinguished Professor in the School of Public Policy at Oregon State University (OSU), part of the College of Liberal Arts. He holds affiliate professorships in multiple OSU programs, including Water Resources Management, Environmental Sciences, and Marine Resource Management. His professional experience spans over three decades, including roles as Director of the Public Policy Graduate Program (2003–2023) and Fulbright Scholarships in Botswana (2003) and Canada (2023).
Dr. Steel earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Washington State University, with prior degrees from Eastern Washington University and Spokane Falls Community College. His research focuses on sustainability governance, wildfire adaptation, and the intersection of science and politics, particularly in rural and small local governments. Notable works include State and Local Government: Sustainability in the 21st Century (2024) and articles on wicked environmental problems and civic discourse in legislatures.
His grants include NSF funding for wildfire adaptive capacity studies (2019–2024) and NIFA research on climate change adaptation (2013–2017). Awards include the University Distinguished Professorship and Fulbright recognitions. He teaches courses on policy analysis, public organizations, and international rural policy, and serves on editorial boards for journals like the Journal of Rural and Community Development.
