Brent Helliker is a Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on plant physiological ecology and global ecological processes, particularly the impacts of climate change on plant physiology and ecosystem responses. He holds a B.S. from the University of Kansas (1995), an MPhil from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (1998), and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah (2001).
Key research interests include plant responses to climate variability, stable isotope analysis, and the interplay between plant physiology and large-scale environmental processes. His lab develops methods using stable isotopes (e.g., oxygen, hydrogen) to trace biological and abiotic processes across temporal and spatial scales, from subcellular to global levels. Specific emphases include C3/C4 plant physiology, carbon/water cycle dynamics, and reconstructing past environmental conditions.
Recent work explores leaf thermoregulation, grass evolutionary lineages via hyperspectral imaging, and the hydraulic legacy of C4 photosynthesis evolution. Publications span journals like Plant, Cell & Environment, New Phytologist, and Nature. Helliker collaborates widely with meteorologists, geochemists, and modelers to bridge disciplinary gaps in Earth system science.
Grants include NSF-funded projects on lineage-based functional types and grassland macroecology. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address pressing questions in global change biology and ecosystem resilience.
