His work uniquely bridges equipment biomechanics, behavioral risk assessment, and policy implementation - currently examining bicycle helmet legislation impacts, winter sports safety interventions, and environmental determinants of playground injuries. This translational research directly informs provincial health policies and clinical guidelines.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Department of Paediatrics CARE Researcher Award (2020)
- University of Calgary Sustainability Award Finalist (2020)

As an educator, Dr. Hagel integrates real-world policy challenges into graduate training while leading a multidisciplinary team that connects clinical researchers, epidemiologists, and community stakeholders. His sustained funding through competitive awards demonstrates research excellence in child health and safety.
The Healthy Children Families & Communities Program under his direction fosters collaborative research across medical, kinesiology, and public health disciplines to transform injury prevention science into community practice, with particular focus on vulnerable child populations.
