Brent Doberstein is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and managed retreat in developing countries, with a geographic emphasis on Asia and Canada. He actively supervises graduate students in hazards mitigation, climate change adaptation, and institutional capacity building.
Recent courses taught include GEOG101: Geography and Human Habitat, GEOG306: Human Dimensions of Natural Hazards, and specialized field research courses in Indonesia and Canada. His work integrates post-disaster reconstruction, vulnerability reduction, and sustainable resource management across multiple scales.
Key research interests include the interplay between climate change and hazards, community resilience in disaster-prone areas, and policy frameworks for adaptive governance. His publications address topics such as wildlife trade regulation, cyclone impact assessments, and managed retreat strategies for coastal megacities. He emphasizes cross-cultural knowledge integration in climate adaptation initiatives.
Future research priorities (2025–2030) emphasize supervised studies in hazards/disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and managed retreat. He collaborates internationally on projects analyzing disaster recovery, institutional capacity, and environmental policy effectiveness.
