Brent A. Satterly is a full Professor at Widener University, holding dual affiliations in the Department of Social Work and the Center for Human Sexuality Studies. He serves as faculty advisor for dual-degree programs combining Social Work (MSW/PhD) with Human Sexuality (MEd/PhD), as well as interdisciplinary degrees with Public Administration and Clinical Psychology. His roles include teaching, research, and leadership in Widener’s strategic initiatives on experiential learning and inclusion.
Dr. Satterly earned a PhD in Human Sexuality Education from the University of Pennsylvania (2004) and an MSS from Bryn Mawr College (1995). His teaching philosophy integrates existentialism and social reconstructivism, emphasizing experiential methods such as interactive workshops and case studies to bridge theory and practice. He has consistently high student evaluations for fostering accountability and diverse learning styles.
Research focuses on three core areas: (1) LGBTQ+ professional identity development in social work, (2) pedagogical innovations in human sexuality and social work education, and (3) efficacy of sexuality-focused textbooks. Notable outputs include co-authoring Sexuality Concepts for Social Workers (2020) and pioneering the Intergenerational Mentoring Model.
Award-winning educator, Satterly has received the Clarence R. Moll Professor of the Year Award and the prestigious 2025 Julie E. Wollman Endowed Award for Inclusion and Belonging for his advocacy work. He designed Dr. Brent’s Queer History Mystery: The Disability Edition, an interactive learning experience promoting LGBTQ+ and disability history awareness across Widener’s community. He also organized the Care Fair to connect students/staff with university resources.
Media engagements include expert commentary on LGBTQ+ crisis support, drag performance at Pride events, and podcast discussions linking Harry Potter narratives to educational strategies. Beyond academia, he resides in Haddon Township, NJ with his husband of 32 years and three cats.
