Brendan Whittle

Professor Brendan Whittle holds the position of Professor of Applied Pharmacology at Queen Mary University of London's William Harvey Research Institute within the School of Medicine. He also serves as a Visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire and a visiting lecturer at the University of Tampere, Finland. His academic credentials include a B.Pharm., Ph.D., and D.Sc., complemented by fellowships from the British Pharmacological Society and Royal Society of Medicine. He has been honored with the Gaddum Lecture Prize and the Sandoz Prize.

Research interests span pharmacology, gastroenterology, and pulmonary vascular disease, focusing on mechanisms of drug-induced gastrointestinal injury, prostacyclin analogues, and anti-inflammatory therapies for colitis. His industry experience includes 20 years at the Wellcome Research Laboratories, where he led pharmacology teams, and roles at Daiichi Pharmaceuticals and as a consultant for major pharma companies.

Key collaborations include work with Professors Lucy Clapp (UCL), Csaba Varga (University of Szeged), and Lenard Lichtenberger (University of Texas). As a Director of William Harvey Research Ltd., he oversees sponsored research. With over 350 peer-reviewed publications and recognition as an ISI Highly Cited Researcher (1980–2000), his contributions to drug development and pre-clinical research are globally acknowledged.
