Brendan McMullan

Dr. Brendan McMullan is a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Discipline of Paediatrics at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and a Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist and Microbiologist working at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick. His dual clinical and research roles position him at the forefront of pediatric infectious disease management and antimicrobial stewardship in Australia.

Dr. McMullan's research program focuses on antimicrobial resistance and better use of antibiotics in children, infections in immunocompromised children and young people, as well as congenital infections. He employs innovative surveillance data methodologies to optimize antibiotic therapy in pediatric populations. His work spans quality improvement program implementation, patient-centered care, and guideline and policy development in pediatric infectious diseases.

His recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on translating research into clinical practice, with numerous studies on antimicrobial stewardship programs, novel trial designs for pediatric infections, and strategies to improve antibiotic use while reducing harm. His work often involves national collaborations and has significant implications for healthcare policy and clinical guidelines.

Dr. McMullan holds leadership positions in several prominent professional organizations, including serving as Chair of ANZPID (the Paediatric Interest Group of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases), Secretary of the World Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases, and as an Evolve clinical champion with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-chaired the National COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Taskforce Paediatric and Adolescent Care Panel.

His research is supported by numerous competitive grants including MRFF, NHMRC, and philanthropic funding, reflecting the significance and impact of his work in pediatric infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.
