Brendan Gillis serves as the Director of Teaching and Learning at the American Historical Association (AHA), where he oversees initiatives celebrating innovative history pedagogy and advocating for educators' and students' interests. Concurrently, he holds the position of Assistant Professor of History (on leave) at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, having previously served as Assistant Director of the Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast. Gillis contributes to the AHA's Teaching History with Integrity Initiative and sits on the editorial board of Perspectives in History.
His research centers on cultural histories of law, politics, and local government in colonial North America and the British empire, with current work focused on completing the manuscript "Empire of Peace: A Global History of the British Magistrate, 1660-1835." This scholarship bridges legal, political, and cultural frameworks within imperial contexts, emphasizing magistrate roles in governance and societal order.
Recent publications like "Maintaining Standards" and "The Uncertain Future of Social Studies in Virginia" reflect his commitment to defending academic freedom in K-12 education. These works analyze threats to historical scholarship integrity, curriculum politicization, and support systems for history educators, positioning him as a key advocate against restrictive educational policies.
