Brendan Boyd serves as Associate Professor and Political Science Discipline Coordinator in the Department of Anthropology, Economics and Political Science at MacEwan University's Faculty of Arts and Science. He is also a member of the Research Institute for Urban Wellness and the Social Innovation Institute Steering Committee.
Dr. Boyd earned his PhD from the University of Victoria, focusing on intergovernmental relations and policy diffusion in Canadian federalism. His research examines how governments learn from each other when developing solutions to critical policy issues, with specialization in climate change responses across Canadian provinces.
His scholarly work consistently analyzes policy diffusion mechanisms within Canada's federal system, emphasizing provincial experimentation as policy laboratories. Recent publications (2017-2021) reveal patterns of cross-jurisdictional learning in climate governance, the impact of U.S. politics on Canadian policy, and evolving roles of public servants in democratic systems, demonstrating methodological rigor through elite interview analysis.
His contributions have been recognized with competitive grants:
- SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2020)
- SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grant (2016)
- SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship (2013)
Dr. Boyd actively supervises senior undergraduate independent studies and collaborates with policymakers through SSHRC-funded research on intergovernmental policy learning. His professional engagement includes the Canadian Political Science Association and Institute of Public Administration of Canada, where he advances public policy scholarship.
Through the Research Institute for Urban Wellness and Social Innovation Institute, he participates in interdisciplinary efforts addressing urban governance challenges and community wellness initiatives.
