Professor Brendan Barrett is an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University's School of Media and Communication and holds additional roles as a specially appointed professor at Osaka University's Center for the Study of Co*Design (Japan), visiting professorships at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, and the University of Tokyo Institute of Future Initiatives. His research focuses on science communication, sustainability, ethical urbanism, urban planning, and climate change. Barrett is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (UK) and has extensive experience with the United Nations, including founding the bilingual Our World magazine and producing award-winning documentaries. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to urban governance, environmental policy, and educational innovation.
Research interests span urban policy-making, low carbon cities, energy systems, and ethical urban development. He has authored books such as Ethical Cities (2021), published journal articles on urban sustainability, and produced commissioned reports for cities globally through the UN Global Compact Cities Programme. His teaching and supervision emphasize urban sustainability challenges in contexts like Dhaka.
