Brenda Spotton Visano is a University Professor in the Department of Economics and the School of Public Policy and Administration at York University. Her interdisciplinary work focuses on heterodox macroeconomics, microfinance, and financial vulnerability. She holds academic leadership roles, including membership in multiple graduate programs and national committees such as the Progressive Economics Forum and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada's Consumer Protection Advisory Committee.
Dr. Spotton Visano holds a PhD from McGill University. Her research bridges theory and practice, addressing financial systems, gender equity in economics, and First Nations social services funding. She has led community-based projects like the ACCESS Community Capital Fund and contributed to policy reviews for First Nations organizations.
Her awards include the Canadian Association of University Teachers Award for Dedicated Service and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Status of Women Award. She has secured over $600K in research funding, emphasizing public outreach on microcredit and community economic development.
Her teaching and administrative roles include directing York University’s Transition Year Program and chairing the University Senate. She advocates for non-traditional student access and has been a key negotiator in university collective agreements and pension reforms.
Brenda’s community engagement spans roles with the Black Creek Financial Action Network and ACORN’s study on high-cost credit. Her work integrates critical pedagogy, financial literacy, and advocacy for marginalized groups, reflecting her commitment to equitable economic systems.
