Dr. Brenda Jo Smith is an Associate Professor in the School of Music at the University of Florida, specializing in voice pedagogy and vocal science. She holds degrees from the University of Evansville, Westminster Choir College, and the University of Maryland, with further studies in Germany. Her research focuses on lifelong singing strategies, vocal health, and choral pedagogy, particularly for aging singers. She has collaborated internationally with institutions like the Voice Foundation and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
Dr. Smith’s career includes teaching at Westminster Choir College, Dickinson College, and Rowan University, alongside directing programs such as 'Sing for Life' for Parkinson’s patients. She co-founded the 'German for Singers' program at Middlebury College, integrating language and culture with vocal performance.
Her scientific contributions include the Van Lawrence Award (2000) and the 2018 'Spirit of Gainesville' Arts Award. She serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Voice and Plural Publishing, and her works include textbooks on vocal pedagogy, diction, and choral practices.
