Brenda Cartmel is a Senior Research Scientist and Lecturer in the Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health. Her work focuses on cancer prevention and survivorship, particularly through diet, exercise, and tobacco treatment interventions. She co-leads the Personalized Intervention Program: Tobacco Treatment for Lung Cancer Screening Patients (PIP) within the Yale Lung SPORE and contributes to nationwide studies on cancer survivorship.

Her research spans clinical trials like the Lifestyle, Exercise, and Nutrition (LEAN) study and the Women's Activity and Lifestyle Study in Connecticut (WALC), examining weight loss, chemotherapy completion, and quality of life improvements for cancer survivors. She also investigates skin carotenoids and tanning addiction as noninvasive markers for cancer prevention.
Recent publications highlight her contributions to understanding diet quality, physical activity, and their impact on ovarian and breast cancer outcomes. Collaborators include Melinda Irwin, Tara Sanft, and Leah Ferrucci.
Her work extends to health communication, targeting barriers to lifestyle changes during chemotherapy and disparities in interventions for Black and Latina women. She is actively involved in the Yale Cancer Center and the Obesity Research Working Group.
