Brenda Brown is an Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture. Her work bridges art, ecology, and design through interdisciplinary research exploring landscape ecosystems, soundscape perception, and cultural narratives. She holds degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Her research focuses on interpreting landscape processes through sound, oral histories, and collaborative projects. Notable projects include the SSHRC-funded Manitoba Farmstead Shelterbelts study (2024 exhibition), Tzintzuntzan hummingbird habitat restoration (Mexico, 2015), and Spring Ice sound installations (2010). She has been awarded residencies at Chaco Culture National Historical Park and CMMAS, and fellowships from MacDowell Colony and Yaddo.
Awards include a Merit Award from the Society of Landscape Architects for her 1998 exhibition catalog. Her recent book project traces Manitoba’s ecological and cultural landscape history from the last Ice Age to modern shelterbelt programs.
Brown teaches Ecology + Design, Design Research, and studios in the Environmental Design program. Her work integrates art, ecology, and community engagement through multimedia exhibitions, sound installations, and edited volumes.
