Brandon Menke is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the Gender Studies Program. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Yale University and an MFA in Creative Writing from New York University. His research explores intersections of queer theory, poetry, visual art, and environmental humanities, with a focus on 20th- and 21st-century American literature. His current book project, Slow Tyrannies: Queer Lyricism, Visual Regionalism, and the Transfigured World, examines queer lyricism in American literature and visual art from the 1920s to 1970s.
Menke’s education includes a B.A. (summa cum laude) in English from Washington University in St. Louis and affiliate studies at University College London. He has held editorial roles at The Yale Review and Palimpsest, and his creative and critical work appears in journals like POETRY, Columbia Journal, and bæst.
His research interests span LGBTQ+ studies, queer pedagogy, and experimental criticism. Recent publications include analyses of Hart Crane, Langston Hughes, and Federico García Lorca, alongside collaborative poetry projects with Jahan Khajavi. Menke has received numerous fellowships, including the Robert M. Leylan and Thomas Collyer Eastman Graduate Fellowships.
Teaching focuses include American literature surveys, creative writing, and courses on the New York School of poets and painters. He co-founded ND Poetics at Notre Dame and has organized conferences on topics like ecohumanism and queer modernism.
