Dr. Brandon Mahan is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Earth and Environmental Science at James Cook University (JCU), where he joined the Geoscience department in 2020. He is the founding member of the IsoTropics Geochemistry Lab at JCU and actively contributes to the development of laboratory and analytical capabilities at JCU's Advanced Analytical Centre (AAC).
Dr. Mahan completed his PhD in 2018 at l'Institut de Physique du Globe du Paris on a Fellowship from La Sorbonne (Paris), followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Isotope Metallomics at Macquarie University in a split role between geo- and biomedical sciences.
His research spans trace element and isotope geochemistry with applications across Earth Systems and Life Sciences. He specializes in aqueous geochemistry, cosmochemistry, experimental petrology, and isotope metallomics. His work includes methods development for scalable trace metal isotope geochemistry with applications to environmental science, human health and disease, and critical minerals exploration. As an advocate for using metals and their isotopes in understanding human disease and green energy transition, he actively collaborates with academic, government, and industry stakeholders.
His recent publications demonstrate expertise across multiple domains including medical applications of isotope geochemistry (Alzheimer's research, biomarker development), mineral exploration techniques, planetary science, and analytical method development. His research shows a strong interdisciplinary approach bridging geoscience with biomedical applications.
Dr. Mahan is a strong advocate for scaffolded teaching/learning and knowledge foundations through experience. He actively engages within and outside JCU to promote experiential student activities, work-integrated learning, and career guidance in Earth and Environmental Sciences.
He applies his skillset to drive novel research agendas while building depth and breadth within Geosciences by cultivating relationships with complementary research teams across Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Archaeology and Marine Science.
