Brandon L Jutras is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology-Immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. His research focuses on Spirochetes, a poorly understood group of bacteria linked to diseases like Lyme disease, Syphilis, Relapsing Fever, and Leptospirosis. Leveraging bacteriology and translational medicine, his lab investigates pathogenesis from atomic to whole-organism levels to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of spirochetal diseases.
- Education: BS from Eastern Illinois University (2008), PhD from University of Kentucky (2013)
- Key Research Areas: Spirochetes, Peptidoglycan persistence, Lyme disease pathogenesis, Autoimmunity, Translational therapies
Recent studies highlight breakthroughs in antibiotic efficacy (piperacillin vs. doxycycline) and peptidoglycan's role in chronic Lyme disease symptoms. Collaborative work explores fibroblast-like synoviocytes in Lyme arthritis and noninvasive peptidoglycan analysis in living animals.
