Brady Gibbons

Brady Gibbons is a Professor of Materials Science in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU), and serves as the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering. He also co-directs the Materials Synthesis and Characterization Institute. His research focuses on multifunctional thin film materials, including dielectrics, superconductors, semiconductors, and piezoelectric materials for energy applications. He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Penn State (1998) and has been at OSU since 2006 after an 8-year tenure at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Research Interests:
His work emphasizes structure-process-property relationships in thin films, novel instrumentation development, and integration science. Key areas include:

• Ferroelectric and piezoelectric thin films for MEMS
• Dielectric materials for energy storage
• Superconducting materials for advanced applications
• X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic ellipsometry characterization

He pioneered integration science strategies to combine material functionalities for enhanced properties.

• 2004 R&D 100 Award (for superconducting wire research)

Advising & Grants: He has advised/co-advised 20 graduate students at OSU and holds 9 patents/patent applications. His NSF CAREER grant supported environmentally benign piezoelectric materials. Research has spanned Los Alamos National Lab (2001–2006) and OSU, with over 60 peer-reviewed publications.
