Brad Schmidt serves as Distinguished Research Professor and Department Chair at Florida State University, directing the Anxiety and Behavioral Health Clinic. His translational research program targets anxiety disorders, PTSD, substance use, and suicide prevention through NIH/DoD-funded clinical trials and micro-intervention development.
Educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin (1991). His research focuses on cognitive risk mechanisms including anxiety sensitivity, intolerance of uncertainty, and thwarted belongingness, with applications across neurodegenerative disorders and gun violence prevention. Current projects emphasize transdiagnostic approaches to vulnerable populations through large-scale multi-site protocols.
Recent publications demonstrate expertise in computerized interventions for anxiety sensitivity, PTSD comorbidity patterns, and cognitive mechanisms in psychopathology, reflecting a strong translational focus from laboratory to clinical implementation. His work frequently employs longitudinal designs and neural biomarkers to understand etiological pathways.
Dr. Schmidt actively mentors trainees including K-award recipient Alexandria Meyer and postdoc Aiden Payne, securing substantial external funding from NIH and DoD for projects examining etiology, treatment, and prevention of anxiety-related conditions. He recruits graduate students for Fall 2026.
He leads the Anxiety and Behavioral Health Clinic, which functions as both a research hub for translational studies and a clinical training site specializing in evidence-based anxiety treatments.
