Brad Sageman is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Earth & Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University. He also serves as Co-Director and Faculty Affiliate of the Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy, and Academic Director for the Master of Science in Energy and Sustainability (MSES) program. His academic career spans over three decades with a focus on stratigraphy and carbon cycle dynamics.
Education:
- Ph.D. Geological Sciences, University of Colorado
- B.Sc. Biology, Denison University
Research Interests: Sageman’s work focuses on chronostratigraphy through integration of stratigraphic data with geochronology, astrochronology, and chemostratigraphy. Key areas include high-resolution time scales for sedimentary sequences, carbon burial processes, and ocean-climate interactions during events like Ocean Anoxic Events (OAEs), Neoproterozoic glaciations, and the PETM. His fieldwork has concentrated in North America’s Cretaceous Western Interior basin, supplemented by studies in Europe and Asia.
Teaching: Courses include EARTH 114 (Evolution and the Scientific Method), EARTH 330 (Sedimentary Geology), and ISEN 230/PHIL 270 (Climate Change and Sustainability).
Collaborations and Labs: Active collaborations with colleagues Jacobson and Hurtgen on carbon cycle projects. Field research incorporates ODP core analyses and multi-proxy geochemical methods.
