Brad R. Roth is a Professor of Law and Political Science at Wayne State University, holding a joint appointment between the Department of Political Science and the Law School. His research focuses on international law, comparative public law, and political theory, with particular emphasis on sovereignty, human rights, and democratic governance. He has authored or co-edited over 20 books and 50 scholarly articles, including influential works such as Governmental Illegitimacy in International Law (1999) and Democracy and International Law (2020). His teaching spans courses like International Law, U.S. Foreign Relations Law, and Political Theory of Public Law.
Roth earned his LL.M. from Columbia University, Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, J.D. from Harvard Law School, and B.A. from Swarthmore College. Before academia, he practiced law and served as a law clerk to the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. His awards include the 1999 American Society of International Law Certificate of Merit.
His scholarship addresses topics such as state recognition, human rights implementation, the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, and the intersection of sovereignty with democratic principles. Recent publications analyze electoral norms in peacebuilding, the role of sovereign equality in global pluralism, and the legal challenges of non-consensual state dissolution.
