Brad Kard is a Professor and Extension Specialist for Structural and Urban Entomology at Oklahoma State University's Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology. He holds an Endowed Chair in Structural and Household Entomology. His research focuses on subterranean termites' biology, ecology, and management, including their role in native grasslands and the development of sustainable pest control strategies. He collaborates with national and international researchers and actively engages in technology transfer to pest control associations and the public. Kard has a background in high school teaching and military service as an Army Platoon Sergeant and Ranger Officer.
Education: PhD in Entomology (North Carolina State University), MS in Plant Pathology (Virginia Tech), BS in Biological Science (San Jose State University). Certifications include Board Certified Entomologist (Urban/Industrial) and Oklahoma Pesticide Applicator License (Categories 3a, 6, 7a, 7b).
Research emphasizes termite colony characteristics, pesticide efficacy, and ecological impacts. Recent work includes studies on wood decomposition in wetlands, ant diversity surveys, and prescribed fire effects on rangeland insects. He leads the OSU Structural and Urban Entomology Program, supported by grants from BASF, USDA, and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Teaching includes courses like Entomology Capstone and Master’s Research, focusing on supervised field and lab experiences. Over 15 years of funded projects include termite baiting studies, pesticide training programs, and ecological assessments.
