Brad B. Bowman is an Associate Professor and Director of the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program at the University of Louisville. He holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on medieval Islamic history, particularly Christian communities in Syria-Palestine under early Islamic rule, and the intersection of monastic life with medieval Arabic poetry.
Education: PhD (Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations), University of Chicago.
Research Interests: Bowman’s work explores the dynamics of Christian monastic communities in the early Islamic period, leveraging Arabic poetry to analyze their cultural and religious contexts. His monograph Christian Monastic Life in Early Islam (Edinburgh University Press, 2021) is a key contribution to this field. Current projects include examining monastic institutions through Arabic poetic lenses.
