H. Bowman Hawkes was a founding professor and chair of the Department of Geography at the University of Utah from 1947 to 1977. He established the department's Master’s and Ph.D. programs, awarding the first Ph.D. in 1951. Known for innovative teaching methods like closed-circuit TV instruction and popular field trips across Utah, he also taught extension courses statewide and at universities such as Washington State and Wisconsin State.

His research emphasized resource conservation, leading to the Frederick William Reynolds Lecture in 1960. He represented geography in the National Science Foundation’s Earth Science curriculum reform post-Sputnik and served as president of the Association of American Geographers’ Pacific Coast and Great Plains-Rocky Mountain regions.
Awarded the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1975, he continued teaching post-retirement. His legacy includes a paleoclimate research scholarship established in his name in 2024.
