Borja Ibarra Urruela is an Assistant Research Professor at IMDEA Nanociencia, where he leads the Molecular Motors Manipulation Lab within the Nanobiosystems research line. He joined the institute in January 2010, bringing expertise in single-molecule manipulation techniques to study complex biological systems.
His research focuses on the biophysical characterization of biological molecular motors using optical tweezers and single-molecule data analysis. His work lies at the intersection of molecular biology, biophysics, and nanotechnology, aiming to understand the mechanics of multi-state biomolecular systems at the single-molecule level.
Borja Ibarra obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2001. He pursued postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley in the lab of Prof. Carlos Bustamante, where he specialized in generating and interpreting single-molecule data on complex biological systems.
He previously worked at the Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (CNB-CSIC) in Madrid before establishing his independent research line at IMDEA Nanociencia. His career trajectory reflects a strong commitment to advancing nanoscale biosystem research through precision experimental methods.
Dr. Ibarra is actively involved in research leadership and laboratory development. He founded and directs the Molecular Motors Manipulation Lab, which focuses on cutting-edge investigations into molecular motor dynamics and function using nanomanipulation technologies.
