Dr. Bora Cetin is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) and Associate Director of the National Center for Infrastructure Transformation. His research focuses on sustainable geotechnical engineering, recycled materials in infrastructure, pavement design, frost heave mitigation, and environmental remediation. He has been funded by agencies including USDOT, NSF, and multiple state DOTs.
Education:
- Ph.D., Civil Engineering, University of Maryland, 2012
- M.S., Civil Engineering, University of Maryland, 2009
- B.S., Civil Engineering, Istanbul Technical University, 2007
Research interests span eight key areas: (1) Sustainability of geotechnical structures using waste materials, (2) Soil remediation with industrial byproducts, (3) Nuclear waste disposal in shale media, (4) Pavement design improvements, (5) Frost heave and thaw weakening prediction, (6) Heated pavement systems, and (7) Engineering education innovations. Recent work emphasizes engineered water repellency for cold-climate resilience and recycled aggregate utilization.
Publications reflect a focus on pavement mechanics, material characterization, and environmental sustainability. Awards include the 2022 Stephen J. Ressler Best Paper Award and 2022 ASCE Journal of Civil Engineering Education Award.
Grants and partnerships include projects on recycled aggregates, freeze-thaw resistant materials, and pavement ME design optimization. He collaborates with state agencies and federal organizations to translate research into practical infrastructure solutions.
