Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins is the Shapiro Visiting Professor of International Affairs at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs, serving as Full-Time Faculty. She currently holds the role of Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security since 2021, overseeing critical national security bureaus and leading AUKUS implementation. Previously, she served in the Obama Administration as Special Envoy for Threat Reduction Programs, driving global efforts against WMD proliferation and establishing initiatives like the Global Health Security Agenda. Her academic credentials include a PhD in International Relations (University of Virginia) and an LL.M. in International Law (Georgetown University).
Her research focuses on arms control, nonproliferation strategies, and integrating global health security into international diplomacy. She pioneered mentorship programs for women of color in security sectors through founding WCAPS and Organizations in Solidarity. Jenkins has taught courses on WMD and delivered the Elliott School's 2021 graduation keynote.
Key achievements include being the first African American Under Secretary of State and leading U.S. delegations at Nuclear Security Summits (2010–2016). Her policy work bridges military, health, and diplomatic domains, reflected in her roles as a legal advisor to the 9/11 Commission and U.S. Arms Control Agency.
