Bonney MacDonald is a Professor of English at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU), where she has served since 2008 as both the head of the Department of English, Philosophy and Modern Languages and a faculty member. She holds a B.A. in English and Psychology from California State University, Sacramento (1978), an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Nottingham, England (1979), and an M.A. (1983) and Ph.D. (1988) in American Literature from Yale University.
Her research focuses on the literary and cultural impact of figures such as Frederick Jackson Turner, Willa Cather, and Will James, alongside 19th- and 20th-century Western writers like Henry James, Hamlin Garland, Wallace Stegner, and William Kittredge. She has authored Henry James’s Italian Hours and contributed articles to scholarly discussions of these authors. Dr. MacDonald also serves as the WTAMU Series Editor on the American West for Texas A&M University Press.
In teaching, she specializes in American literature, particularly the American West, and has pioneered onsite ranch courses exploring the region’s literature, culture, and history. She coordinates the department’s Community Outreach initiatives and oversees the English Graduate Program. Dr. MacDonald has participated in NEH seminars, received teaching awards, and held leadership roles in the Western Literature Association, including co-president in 2011.
